About
Us
Like most independent filmmakers
out there, we here at Misty Falls Motion Picture Company started
out with very little.
We all dream about making movies, but to really go out and do it
takes a lot of work and a lot of diverse skills. So here's the inside
track on who, what, why, when and where!
The core of Misty Falls consists
of a small group of people with a diverse set of individual skills
that alone would not get a film made...but together complete the
necessary ingredients for a production company.
We share a love of filmmaking and the desire to produce superior
craftsmanship and production values for a minimum of what it costs
big Hollywood studios.
So without further ado, let's meet the team....

CHRISTOPHER
JOHNSON: Writer, Producer, Director
This
is where it all started. Like a lot of young filmmakers out there,
Johnson got his start with his Dad's super 8 home movie camera
and was bitten by the bug early. In 1990 he moved to LA to do
work as a professional special make-up artist and has done the
prosthetics for such films as DROP DEAD FRED and LAST OF THE MOHICANS.
Following his stint on the Hollywood films, Johnson began seriously
pursuing independent filmmaking of his own and in January 1994
released his first co-written, produced and directed feature to
the direct to video market. It was with this film that THE MISTY
FALLS MOTION PICTURE COMPANY was founded.

JASON
DETRANI : Director of Photography
Mr.
Detrani has been involved in film production both professionally
and academically for the past 15 years. His experience spans both
independent and studio produced motion pictures giving him valuable
insight into the inner workings of film production. An experienced
cinematographer as well as camera operator, Detrani has lent his
valuable skills to the filming of "Summer of Tomorrows," and moved
from 16mm and 35mm filmmaking into the realm of digital filmmaking.

ROBERT
MELNYK: Associate Producer, Composer, Sound Designer
Rob
and Chris met while working together on a small production in
their home town and have worked together ever since. Melnyk is
a veteran of the local music scene in upstate New York, having
produced many jingles and original music for advertisers. He has
composed and performed the scores for both Johnson's first film
and SHADES OF DARKNESS. Melnyk's other contributions include the
sound design and mixing of the final audio tracks for the films,
as well as designing and building customized camera support gear
for production.

SCOTT
SWINAMER: Camera Operator

A life long love of cinema and filmmaking has contributed to Swinamer's
ability to put the right thing in front of the lens. Over the
past ten years, the television industry in upstate New York has
seen a great number of commercial advertising spots created by
Swinamer and his associates. Though Johnson often photographs
most of his films, he and Swinamer work very closely to achieve
the look for their films.

D.
DUKE HOLDSWORTH: Stills Photographer and Physical Effects Designer

Having worked in a power plant for over twenty years, Holdsworth
has gathered a plethora of mechanical skills to complement his
photographic eye. SHADES OF DARKNESS required a number of daunting
effects for a low budget feature, and that fell right into this
"gent's" catagory. While capturing all the behind the scenes stills,
Holdsworth was still able to rig exploding stop lights, trucks
that slid sideways, hanging victims, sunken ships, houses that
don't exist anymore and a number of other feats.

MICHAEL
MELNYK: Special Visual Effects Supervisor
This gentleman is the person who coaxes the special effects computers
into making things look real smooth. Everything from a simple
blue or green screen composites to digital manipulation of images.
It's all in a day's (or six months) work for Mr. Mike Melnyk.

ERIC
MARUSCAK: Graphic Designer
Maruscak has done local
artistic and graphical design work for upstate New York area printing
companies and design departments over the past eight years. Trained
in computer design, it is Maruscak's job to create the aesthetic
for Misty Falls in the print medium.

Why the Misty Falls name?
"When I was writing the first draft
of SHADES, there was this water fall where a lot of the story took place.
I was always describing the thing like - 'the CAMERA MOVES over the churning
water as the misty fog envelopes the falls.' - After about the tenth time,
I got really tired of coming up with new descriptive ways of describing
the thing. So I opted for the simple choice in this case... something
I rarely do. - 'The camera sweeps over the MISTY FALLS as we CRANE UP...
etc.'Later on, when I was founding the company, someone working with me
at the time who had read that draft, said they thought it would make a
great company name. I did too."
